Michigan’s Beef Industry

The cattle industry is a significant agriculture industry for Michigan. As of January 1, 2017, the Michigan cattle herd totaled 1.18 million head, of which 120,000 were beef cows, 425,000 were dairy cows, 25,000 were beef replacement heifers, and 170,000 were dairy replacement heifers.  Cattle on feed for processing totaled 145,000 head according to the USDA Agricultural Statistics Service.

Cattle are raised in 80 of Michigan's 83 counties on about 12,000 farming operations. Cash receipts from cattle and calves in Michigan total $541 million.  Since there are about 9.9 million consumers in the state, the industry meets about 33% of Michigan's demand for beef.
